Ionic Properties


Ionic compounds have a number of properties due to their bonding, they are brittle, non conductive as a solid and have high melting and boiling points.

Ionic bonded compounds have a number of properties due to their bonding and structure. Ionic compounds are brittle as when a force is applied this means the layers of ions move and when the negative and positive ions come into contact they repel and the lattice breaks. Ionic compounds also have a high melting and boiling point as they have strong attractions between the ions so require a large amount of energy to break them apart. Ionic compounds are also soluble, they can be easily dissolved in solvents as they have positive and negative charges. As solids ionic compounds will not conduct electricity as they do not have free moving ions but when an ionic compound is melted or put into a solution these ions can move and they can carry an electrical current.

Melting point is the temperature at which a solid turns into a liquid. The temperature when atoms have enough energy to over come their bonds and turn into a liquid.

Boiling point

Boiling point is the temperature at which a liquid turns into a gas. The particles have enough internal energy to overcome the bonds in the liquid.


A solvent is a liquid substance that can dissolve a solid


Dissolved is a term to describe when a substance is incorporated into a liquid or solvent


A lattice is a 3D layout of atoms of similar sizes next to each other. They are tightly packed and in neat rows and columns
